Wrapping up this year’s Younger Awards — tightened to two instalments this year — is a little home cooking. It’s always a pleasure to shine the spotlight on so many worthy companies and individuals through my annual Canadian golf awards. Without further ado, here are this year’s winners for Canada golf business story, executive, product, accessory and brand.
While it wasn’t the outcome many had hoped for the Presidents Cup’s return to Canadian soil in September was a rare golf spectacle for this nation. Seventeen years removed from its first visit to Royal Montreal in 2007, the match between the United States and the International teams had numerous subplots, including the home side being captained by Mike Weir and three Canadians — Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes and Taylor Pendrith — making the squad. While the Internationals didn’t get it done on the scoreboard, the event was still a win-win for the city of Montreal and the province of Quebec. The economic impact of the Presidents Cup in Montreal was just north of $80 million.
One of the most pressing challenges with the rise in popularity of electric push carts is where to store them. Faced with that issue at his club in Edmonton, PGA of Canada member Jeff MacGregor dreamed up The Cart Locker, a forward-thinking outdoor storage solution for the battery-operated devices. Customers love the modular units because they don’t have to transport their carts to and from the golf course. Operators benefit even more. Cart Locker frees up space by removing inside the clubhouse or pro-shop storage requirement and saves on the labour-intensive aspects of retrieving and putting the carts away. The annual fee a course charges for storage generates another revenue stream for club operations.
